Test Farming vs. Genuine Teaching

The Hidden Trap in GATE Exam Preparation — and How Parents Can Spot It

For parents in Western Australia aiming for a place in a Gifted and Talented (GATE) secondary program, the pressure can feel overwhelming. With admission to elite streams like Perth Modern School coming down to a fraction of a standardised score, it's natural to want to give your child every possible advantage.

As the Perth tutoring industry has boomed, a massive divide has emerged in how children are being prepared for the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET).

On one side is "Test Farming" - a high-volume, commercial franchise model. On the other side is genuine teaching, a specialised, educator-led approach. Understanding the difference between these two methods often decides whether a child burns out or genuinely excels on exam day.

What do we mean by "Test Farming"?

Test farming treats exam preparation like an assembly line in a factory. In this model, success is measured purely by volume. Children are given endless stacks of multiple-choice practice papers, placed into large classrooms of 10 to 15 peers, and subjected to weekly mock exams.

A hallmark of the test farming model is the "take-home exam." Parents receive thick packets of marked test papers to review at the kitchen table, often with a generic answer key or a formulaic, commercialised point rubric.

Why Test Farming Fails the ASET

While test farming makes parents feel like they are getting a high volume of material for their money, it fundamentally misunderstands how ACER designs the test:

  • ACER Doesn't Repeat Questions: The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) designs a brand-new test every single year. Memorising past question patterns or rigid writing formulas is useless when faced with entirely unseen abstract concepts.
  • Testing is Not Teaching: Handing a 10- to 11-year-old a paper showing what they got wrong does not magically give them the tools to fix it. Without a professional educator to dissect their reasoning, looking at errors at home simply breeds frustration and kitchen-table arguments.
  • The Anxiety Trap: Constantly drilling under exam pressure without building foundational confidence leads to early academic burnout and severe test anxiety long before the March exam date arrives.

What do we mean by Genuine Teaching?

Genuine teaching focuses on conceptual mastery and critical thinking. Instead of treating children like test-taking machines, an educator-led approach meets students where they are and builds the higher-order thinking skills they need to solve any problem ACER throws at them.

In a professional tutoring environment, you won't find university students reading answers off a slide deck to a crowded room. Instead, you find qualified educators working in ultra-small groups.

The Power of an Educator-Led Approach

  • Real-Time Diagnostics: In a small-group setting, a professional teacher doesn't wait to grade a test to identify a problem. They observe the child’s scratch paper in real time, catching structural flaws in mathematical logic or reading comprehension immediately.
  • Deep Modular Focus: Rather than rushing through all four sub-tests in a single, frantic session, genuine teaching dedicates deep, uninterrupted blocks to literacy and numeracy. This allows students to learn the mechanics of sophisticated writing and complex quantitative reasoning.
  • Authentic Skills Over Fake Rubrics: Qualified educators reject artificial marking grids. They evaluate components like the Communicating Ideas in Writing section qualitatively, teaching children how to develop an original voice, emotional impact, and sophisticated vocabulary—the exact traits official adult markers look for.

Which Path is Your Child On?

If your preparation strategy relies on sitting in a large franchise classroom, coming home with bundles of test papers, and trying to memorise answer keys at home, your child is being "test farmed." They learn how to take a specific mock paper, but they don't necessarily learn how to think.

When you choose a learning centre with qualified staff, small class ratios, and strong training, you invest in genuine teaching. You give your child the cognitive flexibility, confidence, and real skills they need to walk into the ASET unfazed by the unexpected.

Before you choose a provider, ask yourself: Is my child being taught, or are they just being tested?
