What is GATE

GATE stands for Gifted and Talented Entrance or more recently known as the Academic Selective  Entrance Test (ASET). Testing for Gifted and Talented Programs occurs each year. All applicants for Gifted and Talented Programs need to sit the Academic Selective Entrance Test and may also need to complete combined workshops; auditions; and interviews, depending on the programs they are applying for. Students sit a four part exam consisting of Reading Comprehension, Writing, Quantitative and Abstract Reasoning which can be the pathway for your child gaining a place in selective high school programs.

What types of Gifted & Talented Programs are offered?

Obtaining a place in a selective school will give your child many opportunities for their future academic success. Your child will study with other like-minded students and be engaged in a specially designed curriculum. Additionally, they will enjoy a rich learning environment that is challenging and stimulating. Children can gain entry into either academic programs, arts programs or language programs.

Selective Academic

Entrance into Selective Academic Programs give gifted and talented children the opportunity to engage in a learning environment that is intellectually stimulating and rigorous. The academic testing is rigorous and requires extensive preparation. Our tutors have mastered the exam content and exam taking skills and will cultivate the necessary skills required to pass the exam and earn acceptance into the school of choice.

Selective Languages

Gifted children with linguistic abilities have the opportunity to develop their language skills to an advanced level, develop an appreciation and understanding of culture and enjoy a dynamic and challenging learning environment. We have language tutors who can assist in boosting language skills as well how to navigate through the interview process.

Selective Arts

The media arts program provides a foundation for children interested in pursuing a career in the media industry, journalism, advertising and related fields. Entrance into this program is based on talent and aptitude. Applicants must sit the Academic Selective Entrance Test and participate in workshops and interviews. Our drama classes will assist students to navigate through the workshops and interviews.

How We Can Help

Intuition Educational Support offers GATE tutoring classes and individual tuition in all three areas. However, all students wanting to gain entry any of the programs are required to sit the Academic tests. These tests differ greatly from regular school work. Questions that appear in the tests are more advanced than what students are currently learning at school and require clear professional guidance to prepare otherwise they may be at a disadvantage.  Students will be facing tests that include quantitative and abstract reasoning, reading comprehension as well as a writing component.

Learning concepts and being familiar with the different types of questions that are likely to come up, as well as practising good test taking techniques will put your child in a much better position to gain entrance into their preferred school.

By exposing students to the types of questions asked as well as their structure we give our students the best possible chance of achieving high scores needed to gain a place in any of the selective schools.

We run weekly sessions with our specialised GATE tutors that cover all areas of the GATE test to prepare your child as much as possible. Contact us to find out when these classes are running. We also offer small group workshops during the school holidays. Find out more

With the exam in early 2023 we strongly recommend starting preparation early so that students are ready for the exam.

Weekly Classes

Intuition GATE weekly classes are designed to teach students concepts and to become familiar with different types of questions that may come up in the test. The classes are split into two sections – 90 minutes of literacy and 90 minutes of numeracy. Each class is taught by a specialist in that area. Our weekly classes cover all areas of the GATE test, to prepare your child as much as possible.

Mock Tests

This GATE (ASET) mock exam is designed to give students whether currently in year 5 or year 7 or 8 an opportunity to familiarise themselves with exam environments and the types of questions they may face.

Students will be examined on all four areas of the GATE exam requirement, in the order that they are usually sat. Starting with Reading Comprehension, followed by Communicating Ideas in Writing. Then a short break before undertaking the Quantitative Reasoning, finishing up with Abstract Reasoning.

Workshops

Our GATE workshops run during school holidays as well as 4 weeks prior to the actual test. They are designed for children who are planning to sit the West Australian Selective Schools Tests or apply for scholarship places in both private and public schools. Our programs cover ALL four areas of the exam as well as focus on specific exam strategies and techniques.
