Great Writing

Opposites

Previous blogs on great writing have focused on idioms, similes, and other figurative devices.

While these devices make a piece more interesting line-by-line, some may ask how the whole work may be made more interesting.

One strategy great writers have used throughout history is tackling subjects in an opposite way to how they are usually perceived.

For instance, Japanese ponds were associated with being old and noisy for hundreds of years, e.g.

An old pond,

A frog jumps in;

The sound of water.

-Basho

Then the Japanese poet Ryokan came along and challenged this notion and wrote of ponds in a new way:

A new pond,

A frog jumps in;

No sound at all.

European poets also fell into a rut and were stuck for some time depicting desirable women as otherworldly beauties. Consider these lines from Sonnet 292 by Petrarch:

The eyes I spoke of words that burn…

The waving hair of unmixed gold that shone,

Then Shakespeare arrived, and like Ryokan, challenged traditionally held notions:

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;

If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head

-Shakespeare, Sonnet 130.

Recently, one of my students wanted to write a poem on cherry blossoms. My student talked about how they flowered in spring, and the beauty of their pink flowers falling.

I then challenged them to think about cherry blossoms in a new way, and the result was this beautiful poem:

I can see your skeletal trunk

I feel your weak, spindly branches that reach to touch the white, snowy sky

You shiver as the cold wind whips your trunk

Snow gently falls on you

Making you look like a sugar-covered dessert

It will be a while until your precious blossoms return

The poem went on to win an award.

So, next time you decide to write, ask how you may depict your subject matter in a new way, an opposite way to other writers.

The result might just surprise you!

Rewarding the Courage to Explore

Workshop tutors are often asked, "Is there any homework?" As a writing tutor, I frequently provided work for students to take home, only to find that many returned the following week having not completed it. Whether due to time constraints, lack of motivation, or simply forgetting, traditional homework didn’t seem to be inspiring deeper engagement outside the classroom.

But what if homework wasn’t just about ticking off an assignment? What if it was about sparking curiosity and encouraging students to take ownership of their learning?

At Intuition Educational Support , we decided to try something new.

Turning Curiosity into a Habit

A maths tutor at our centre recently wrote about the difference between being curious and having the courage to satisfy that curiosity in the blog " Cultivating Curiosity: The Path to Academic Success and Personal Growth ." Inspired by this, we introduced a simple yet effective initiative in our writing workshops.

Whenever a student raised an interesting or thought-provoking question during class—about writing, language, or even storytelling techniques—we didn’t just answer it outright. Instead, we challenged them: "Go away, find out the answer, and bring it back next week."

To incentivise this, we introduced gold stars. Any student who returned with their researched answer earned a star. At the end of the term, we tallied the stars, and the class with the highest total won a canteen card reward .

The results were remarkable.

The Power of a Simple Reward

By the end of the year, students were not only asking more questions, but they were also genuinely excited to seek out answers on their own. What started as a gentle nudge quickly became a habit. Instead of viewing learning as something confined to the classroom, they began seeing it as an ongoing process—one they could take control of.

But the real success of this initiative wasn’t just in the numbers. It was in the moment at the final class of the year when several students, knowing there were no more gold stars to earn, still asked:

"Can we still go away and find out the answers?"

That was when we knew we had achieved something special.

Why This Matters

Encouraging curiosity is one thing, but fostering a sense of responsibility for one's own learning is another. When students are not just told to be curious but are actively rewarded for exploring their questions, they begin to see research and inquiry as valuable skills—ones that extend far beyond the classroom.

Creative Writers Still Needed

There has been a lot of discussion about ChatGPT and its ability to compose text including essays, articles, website content etc.

At Intuition, we recently invited ChatGPT to help us create content to promote 'Winter Wonders', one of our creative writing workshops. The result was playful and full of exclamation marks! It was ideal and suited our target market.

It then begged the question that if ChatGPT was able to do this, could it write a piece of creative work, like a narrative? We then asked ChatGPT to compose a one-page horror story.

The result was reasonably coherent and included simple traits expected of a horror story. It featured a boy named Tom who takes refuge in an abandoned house and finds an old mirror. Looking into the mirror he sees not just his reflection, but "eyes that were not his." In a mad panic, Tom tries to escape but fails and is never seen again.

Curious, we asked ChatGPT to write us another one-page horror story, and the result was very similar. This time a young woman named Clara finds herself caught in the rain, and seeking shelter runs towards a "mansion that had been left to rot." When she reaches the mansion, her curiosity gets the better of her, and she decides to explore. As she explores, she comes across an old mirror, and "steps back in horror" when she sees "shadowy figures" lurking behind her reflection. Clara then attempts to run but is dragged back and is never seen again.

What about the other chatbots out there, we wondered, what would they do? We then fed the same prompt to Meta AI with Llama 3.1, and the result again was similar: an old mansion and a curious character who goes exploring. This time, however, instead of a mirror, a room of antique dolls beckons. But the result is the same. The dolls, like the mirrors, draw the main character in. And when the main character tries to escape, they are unable to and are never seen again.

What did we conclude? Well, that chatbots can write reasonably coherent narratives that include simple traits expected of a horror story. How do these pieces rank compared to human-written pieces? Well, if a marker were asked to assess these pieces and was not told it was a chatbot who had written them, they would assume that the author was a reasonable student, perhaps ready to sit the NAPLAN.

Another conclusion that may be drawn is a warning to aspiring GATE students and writers suffering from writer’s block! Do not think you can use chatbots to trick markers or editors. The pieces produced by AI for this experiment were all too predictable and overused the simple idea of a main character being drawn in by something terrible - mirrors on two occasions, and dolls on a third occasion. If any aspiring GATE student were to memorise and reuse such work, they would be quickly marked down. This is because professional markers would see the work for what it is – competent, but ultimately, a regurgitated piece of cliché writing.

Sleep deprivation is a significant issue that greatly affects young people, with long-term deficits leading to serious health problems. It's essential to understand the profound effects of insufficient sleep and the importance of establishing healthy sleep habits, particularly for teenagers.

Health Consequences of Sleep Deprivation

Long-term sleep deficits can lead to various severe health issues:

Cardiovascular Problems: Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to an increased risk of heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, lack of sleep can lead to hypertension, stroke, and heart failure (AHA, 2019).

Obesity: Sleep deprivation affects hormones that regulate hunger, leading to increased appetite and potential weight gain. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that sleep restriction is associated with elevated levels of ghrelin (a hormone that stimulates appetite) and reduced levels of leptin (a hormone that signals satiety) (Taheri et al., 2004).

Weakened Immune System: Adequate sleep is crucial for a robust immune system. Research shows that sleep deprivation can impair the body's ability to fight off infections. A study in Sleep journal demonstrated that individuals who sleep less than seven hours are almost three times more likely to develop a cold compared to those who sleep eight hours or more (Prather et al., 2015).

Emotional and Mental Health Issues: Sleep deprivation is strongly linked to emotional problems such as depression and anxiety. The Journal of Youth and Adolescence highlights that insufficient sleep during adolescence is associated with an increased risk of developing mood disorders (Roberts et al., 2009).

Why Teenagers Are Particularly Affected

Teenagers are the most affected by sleep deprivation due to several biological and social factors:

Delayed Melatonin Release: In teenagers, the release of melatonin, a hormone that induces sleep, occurs later at night compared to children and adults. This shift causes them to feel tired later in the evening and struggle with early morning wakefulness.

Circadian Rhythm Changes: Adolescence brings a reset in the circadian rhythm, the internal clock that regulates sleep-wake cycles. This shift can make it difficult for teenagers to fall asleep early and wake up early, contributing to sleep deficits.

Social and Academic Pressures: Busy schedules, academic demands, and social activities often lead to late bedtimes and early wake-up times, further exacerbating sleep deprivation.

The Importance of a Good Night's Sleep

A good night's sleep is crucial for everyone, especially teenagers, as it improves:

Attention and Cognitive Function: Adequate sleep enhances focus, learning, and memory.

Athletic Performance: Proper rest is essential for physical recovery and peak athletic performance.

Emotional Stability: Sufficient sleep helps regulate emotions and reduce irritability and moodiness.

Overall Health: Sleep supports normal growth, development, and a strong immune system.

Signs of Insufficient Sleep

Even if you think you are getting enough sleep, you may not be. Signs of sleep deprivation include difficulty waking up, trouble concentrating, irritability, moodiness, feeling sad or depressed, and falling asleep during the day.

Tips for Improving Sleep

There are several ways to improve sleep:

Maintain a Regular Sleep Schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends.

Exercise Regularly: Physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper sleep.

Avoid Caffeine: Limit caffeine intake, especially in the afternoon and evening.

Dim Lights Before Bed: Reducing light exposure in the evening can help signal to your body that it’s time to wind down.

Avoid Napping During the Day: Naps can interfere with night-time sleep.

Create a Suitable Sleep Environment: Keep your bedroom cool, quiet, and dark.

Turn Off Electronics Before Bed: Electronic devices emit blue light, which can disrupt sleep. Turn off screens at least an hour before bedtime.

Recommended Sleep Duration

Experts recommend 8-10 hours of sleep for teenagers aged 13-18. However, simply lying in bed trying to sleep does not count. Teenagers often struggle to fall asleep quickly, partly due to spending too much time on electronic devices before bed. Unfortunately, most teens only get 6.5 to 7.5 hours of sleep per night. It's concerning since 6 hours is the absolute minimum needed for the brain to function properly throughout the day. On the other hand, having more than 10 hours of sleep a day can also be detrimental, except when the body needs additional rest due to illness.

The Power of Curiosity

How to Foster Curiosity and Worldliness in Children

Provide Diverse Experiences: Expose children to various experiences, from travel (even if it’s virtual) to exploring different cuisines, music, and languages. Diverse experiences broaden their horizons and foster a global perspective (Fantini, 2009).

Model Curiosity and Openness: Children learn by observing. Show your curiosity and openness to learning new things. Research in Developmental Psychology suggests that parental modelling of curiosity significantly influences children's own curiosity (Gruber et al., 2014).

Support Their Interests: Pay attention to your child's interests and provide resources to explore them further. Supporting their interests fuels their curiosity and passion for learning (Renninger & Hidi, 2016).

Discuss Global Issues: Engage children in age-appropriate discussions about global issues. Encourage them to think about solutions and consider how they can make a difference (Merryfield, 2000).

Reading Comprehension, Clever Students, and Reading Journals.

Before finishing term two, many aspiring GATE students took a mini-test to assess their progress. Part of the test was reading comprehension. The group showed an improvement in their marks. This was because of three reasons: new in-class work that centred around 'vocabulary building', time spent in class focusing on the strategies of clever students, and encouraging students to start to keep reading journals.

‘Vocabulary building' in class involved defining a series of challenging words and looking at examples of how they could be used. Further exercises included looking up a challenging word's synonyms and antonyms. 'Vocabulary building' is important, because so many comprehension questions test word knowledge, and if a student does not know the word, they will probably put down the wrong answer.

Adopting some of the strategies of clever students can also help improve reading comprehension marks:

Clever students often demonstrate good reading habits. Not reading the same old Andy Griffiths or Harry Potter books but going out of their way to read a wide range of material. Books on human anatomy, crime fiction, news articles, and even science dictionaries!

Clever students also demonstrate a keen interest in discussing what they have read with parents and the tutor or other students. This further develops their understanding by allowing them to hear different perspectives on what they have been reading, and make connections between their reading, their lives, and the world at large.

Clever students also always ask questions when they come across something that they do not understand. For example, in a recent class on the collective nouns of animals, one student asked if "hunters ate leopards?" This then led to a class discussion and that student then volunteered to look it up for homework.

Keeping a reading journal has also been shown to help students obtain higher marks in reading comprehension.

By giving students something to write in, they start to engage in a text more fully. Key pieces of information can be jotted down - like the plot of a story, the ingredients of a recipe, or words that they are unfamiliar with. Later, after they have finished reading, they can go back to their journal, reflect on what they have read, and research it further.

Term three is now upon us. It is important that GATE students continue to improve their marks. In-class work will continue to centre around 'vocabulary building', revisiting the strategies of clever students, and encouraging students to keep and maintain their reading journals.

Finding the right tutor for your child can be like navigating a minefield. Due to a lack of regulation, there are many people who call themselves 'tutors', but differ greatly in their teaching environment, qualifications, accreditation, and industry experience.

Many self-proclaimed tutors advertise online and operate independently. However, parents should consider tutors who work at reputable tutoring centres. These centres provide a collaborative teaching environment where tutors can learn from each other and often perform important checks, such as verifying that tutors hold a current Working With Children card (WWC).

Beyond choosing a tutor who works at a tutoring centre, what else should parents look for? A tutor’s qualifications, accreditation, and industry experience, of course!

Some tutoring centres employ high school students or university students without formal qualifications. Parents should ask themselves, what will the result be? Will an unqualified university student have the skills to help my child improve their NAPLAN scores? Or will a registered teacher with an undergraduate degree and a teaching degree achieve better outcomes?

Parents should ask themselves, what will the result be? Will an unqualified university student have the skills to tutor my child who needs to improve their marks in NAPLAN? Or will a registered teacher who holds an undergraduate degree and a teaching degree produce a better outcome.

Sometimes, however, parents may have a budget and may not be able to pay the premium for a registered teacher. If this is the case, parents should at least ask if their child's tutor possesses basic tutoring skills.

In Australia, tutors can take a course accredited by the Australian Tutoring Association (ATA). This course provides tutors with fundamental skills like how to ‘manage the tutoring environment’ and ‘how students learn’.

The industry experience of a child’s tutor is another thing to consider. A tutor’s industry experience can prove useful if parents are wanting to further their child's ability in a field like creative writing. Tutors who have published work or won an award can mentor children to do likewise.

To conclude, many people call themselves tutors but differ greatly in their teaching environment, qualifications, accreditation, and industry experience. A tutoring centre is an environment that provides checks and balances, and tutors with the right qualifications can ensure the right result. Accreditation can help tutors who do not hold qualifications to at least understand the basic principles of tutoring, and a tutor who possesses industry experience can help students improve their abilities to an industry standard.

Courage to be Curious

Preparing for high school and scholarship tests can feel like navigating a maze of stress and expectations, especially for students stepping into the high-stakes arena for the first time. I vividly recall the pressure of those moments from my own journey as a student, sandwiched between my parents' lofty ambitions and my own aspirations. The to-do list seemed endless: study diligently, seize every opportunity, broaden your reading horizons. While these steps undeniably enhance your chances of acing those tests and securing scholarships, they can also become heavy burdens, heaping chronic stress upon students. This stress, with its unwelcome companions of heightened inflammation and cortisol levels, ironically undermines the very goals it seeks to achieve.

Yet, amidst this pressure-cooker environment, there's a silver lining to be found. As a tutor with over six years of experience and a fellow traveller on the path to academic achievement, I've observed parallels between my students' struggles and my own journey to secure a place in GATE (formerly the Academically Talented Program). They trudge into class, dutifully complete assignments, and drag homework home, all in pursuit of that elusive ticket to a brighter future. I've been there, caught in the perpetual cycle of striving for improvement, yet finding the finish line constantly shifting further away.

But amid the frenzy of test scores and scholarship dreams, there's a profound perspective that often gets overshadowed: learning isn't merely a means to an end, but a journey fuelled by our innate curiosity about the world. "Anyone can be curious," goes the adage, "but it takes courage to satisfy that curiosity." It's about marvelling at a brilliant novel and daring to ask, "How did they craft such magic? Can I do something similar?" It's about hearing of ground-breaking scientific breakthroughs and pondering, "How on earth did they unravel that mystery?" We're all blessed with a sense of wonder, but it's the courage to delve deeper, to embrace the unknown, and to seek guidance when needed, that truly propels us forward.

So, what does this have to do with stress? It's about reframing our mindset, transforming distress into eustress – that positive form of stress that propels us toward growth and achievement. When we view challenges not as insurmountable obstacles, but as opportunities to satisfy our curiosity and expand our horizons, stress becomes not a foe to be feared, but a friend that spurs us on to greater heights.

The Importance of Practice

It is always interesting meeting a new class of creative writing students every year, and asking them how many write between classes. Usually, a couple of students raise their hands. This response always astonishes me, for I cannot think of a single student who plays the piano and does not practice between classes.

Ray Bradbury once said that the best thing a beginner or an intermediate writer could do was to write short stories. And write a lot of them! He went on to say that if students wrote a story a week for a year, they would have 52 short stories, and it would be impossible for all of them to be bad. Quantity, he suggested, created quality.

Malcolm Gladwell, argues similarly in his recent book, 'Outliers: The Story of Success'. Using the Beatles as an example, Gladwell claims that the Beatles only became the world-class musicians we know and love today, by performing regularly early in their career. Gladwell calculates the Beatles spent about 10,000 hours practising their music by playing gigs in Hamburg, Germany, between 1960-1964. Gladwell calls this the '10,000-hour rule', and goes on to argue that to become an expert in any field, it is just a matter of practising the skills required in that field over and over again for at least 10,000 hours.

The Importance of Wide-Ranging Interests

I recently ran a short course on Reading Comprehension and Communicating Ideas in Writing for the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET). During the break, I overheard students talking about how much they hated reading and writing, and how much they preferred maths and science instead. This worried me because these students were discounting two of the four components required to do well in the ASET. And it also concerned me for reasons beyond the test.

History shows, for instance, that many significant individuals have demonstrated curiosity in BOTH the arts and sciences. Obvious examples include Aristotle and Leonardo Da Vinci, who made significant contributions to the two fields. But besides them, it is also worth noting Arts titans like Mark Twain who had an interest in electricity, so much so that he struck up a relationship with Nicolas Tesla and was a regular visitor to his lab. Prominent scientists too have shown an interest in the arts. Robert Oppenheimer was well known for quoting poetry while working on a project to split the atom.

So, to conclude, I would encourage all students and parents not to discount one area of study for another. Many significant individuals have demonstrated curiosity in BOTH the arts and sciences. Wide-ranging interests demonstrate a curious mind and those individuals who will make the next significant contribution to society.

“How can you tutor children of such a young age?” When people think about the word ‘tutoring', they often envisage a child with an increased workload, reams of worksheets and parents striving for academic perfection. From an early childhood perspective, this couldn’t be further from reality at Intuition.

Avoid Cliché for the GATE

When GATE students first arrive at Intuition, they are asked to complete an assessment. One of the parts of this assessment involves producing a piece of written expression in twenty-five minutes based on either a picture or written prompt.

Many students respond by using cliché – producing predictable plot lines and/or characters. This may be fine for NAPLAN, as NAPLAN tests competency; however, it is less effective for the GATE, which assesses writing based on its originality.

One of the ways for students to avoid cliché is to show them that there are other ways to write stories. For example, interesting stories that may not feature an introduction or a resolution. Or great stories that feature characters that defy the usual good and evil divide.

Once students open their mind to these possibilities, they can then start to produce their own little masterpieces – pieces of written expression for the GATE that will set them apart from their peers.

Protecting their confidence

Dyslexia means the way that a student’s brain processes information is different. They may experience difficulties with reading, vocabulary and comprehension tasks. This is a processing difficulty, (the same as some people need glasses) not a lack of intelligence. Lesser known is that because their beautiful brains think differently, they often also have very distinctive talents.

As a tutor, I recently experienced how my student with Dyslexia got lost in the system. As a teacher, I am able to appreciate that some class assessments set are not by the teacher or the school, but by the curriculum. Whilst a timed task is designed to challenge students, I believe that the same task also puts some of our students at risk.

I am not talking about the risk of failing one assessment, or even the subject. I am speaking about the fact that we need to protect and preserve their confidence. A student who doesn’t believe in themselves grows into an adult who doesn’t believe in themselves. With an unnecessary lack of confidence, they will avoid the risks in life that are important for them to take if they are to become happy, self-individuated, successful adults.

I am not the first to think this, and that is why schools have IEPs (Individual Education Plans) sometimes known as ILP’s (Individual Learning Plans). These plans are about access and equity in education. I had wrongly assumed that my student had an IEP in place because I knew that he got extra time to complete his in-class tasks. He, however, had a CAP (Curriculum adjusted Program) in place, which I believe was not the right environment for him to flourish.

Essential to Read Widely

When parents ask what the reading comprehension component of the GATE test is like, I reply that it is broad. Very broad!

The Department of Education in its official GATE Parent Presentation indicates that students may be tested on their ability to “understand and interpret a range of texts, which may include fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama, together with diagrams, tables, charts or maps.”

Compare this to what the government post on their website of what Year Sevens may be tested on for NAPLAN - just non-fiction – and the difference could not be starker.

The message, then, is clear. The earlier GATE students interact with a wide range of texts, the better.

Parents can assist their children by buying poetry, or by discussing tables and charts the next time they appear in the newspaper. A recent article in Early Childhood Research Quarterly suggests that parents are not engaging their children with the right type of questions and learning opportunities when it comes to math problems in their child’s early years and that this may have a negative effect on their child’s later mathematical development.

Page to Stage Helps Improve NAPLAN Results

Recent NAPLAN results have been released, and the news is that many students struggled with their writing. Some parents would assume that this means that their child had difficulty with their spelling, grammar or reading. But this was not the case.

Many students had a bigger problem – one of being unable to comprehend, plan and write complete pieces of work. Programs that introduce students to the importance of structure and show children how to construct and execute pieces from start to finish can help.

Intuition holds a Page to Stage program every school holidays. The first day of the program focuses on writing. Students read published narratives, learn how such pieces are structured, and then write their own piece.

The second day of the program then focuses on adapting these pieces for the stage through drama. Drama offers a different learning style, which can assist students that learn best through the body. Drama is also a unique vehicle for teaching students valuable life skills such as confidence, public speaking, collaboration, initiative, and creativity. These skills are widely sought out by employers.

At the end of the second day, a complete performance that incorporates the writing done by students is presented to parents.

Improving Vocabulary

Read Widely and Read Often

Many students believe that if they are reading Harry Potter or have read all the Harry Potters that there is nothing left to read. But that would be a mistake.

Students are struggling more than ever when it comes to demonstrating the breadth of their vocabulary. NAPLAN, GATE and now the even the GAMSAT, test students on their knowledge of words. And while Harry Potter offers readers a reasonable vocabulary, not one novel or series employs all the words in the English language.

The trick then is to read widely and read often. This can be as simple as starting to take an interest in the ingredients on the side of the cereal box in the morning, reading an old fairy tale to a younger sibling, or beginning to take an interest in newspapers and magazines.

If students get stuck, they should not be afraid to ask mum and dad; or better yet, look the word up in the dictionary. And if students start now, no word will ever be beyond them!

Great Writing: Idioms

Idioms are phrases that people often use in their everyday verbal and written communication. However, they are not meant to be taken literally. For example, when someone says that they are ‘feeling blue’, they are not referring to feeling like the colour, but rather that they are communicating that they are feeling sad or depressed.

Thus, idioms express something beyond what is actually stated. Like other types of literary devices, idioms can turn a boring piece of writing, into an interesting one:

‘Break a leg’

‘The pot calling the kettle black’

‘The devil is in the detail’

When using idioms, remember to use them in their exact and commonly accepted format. One student recently wrote that ‘…it was like looking for a pin in a haystack’. This reads strangely to native English speakers and readers who would use the word ‘needle’ instead of ‘pin.’ While many people may still understand what the student was getting at, changing idioms can irritate or confuse listeners or readers.

Great Writing: Similes - Some Figurative Writing DOs and DON'Ts

In my last blog, 'Great Writing: Why Figurative Language Matters', I looked at why writers use figurative language. Similes, for instance, can allow readers to picture scenes in their heads.

Writers, however, must be careful. One student recently wrote: "...and the road was as long as Mount Everest on its side."

While creative, this simile is also illogical. When someone mentions Mount Everest most people often think about its height, rather than its length. A more appropriate comparison would have been "...and the road was as long as the Nile."

Students, like writers, will receive extra admiration from readers if they use a suitable simile in their work. Under the NAPLAN marking rubric, for example, teachers give extra marks to those students who use appropriate similes.

Once students grasp the idea of comparing one like thing to another like or similar thing, it is only a matter of time until they come up with a gem like what one student wrote for us recently, "…and heat draped itself around him like a blanket."

Great Writing: Why Figurative Language Matters

I have written on several occasions on how important it is for GATE students to structure their piece of written expression in a way that stands out. However, it is equally important to have readers connect with that story.

Figurative language is one way students can engage readers, and turn an otherwise dull story into a colourful one.

Students can use onomatopoeias, where the words sound like their meaning, to appeal to a reader’s senses, instead of writing a matter-of-fact passage. Consider: “The eggs cooked in the frying pan” vs. “The eggs sizzled and spat in the frying pan.”

Students can also use similes or metaphors to allow readers to ‘see’ a scene in their heads. For instance, “He ran as fast as Usain Bolt.”

Figurative devices, however, like story structures, must be used with a certain amount of respect.

My next blog will look at some mistakes students have made when using figurative devices.

NAPLAN results as a guide for further learning.

NAPLAN is an acronym which stands for

The National Assessment Program of Literacy and Numeracy

. It is the national assessment for all students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9.

These assessments cover reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. It is expected that all students participate and do their absolute best to obtain a clear snapshot of where their learning strengths and weaknesses appear.

At Intuition Educational Support, we view NAPLAN as a diagnostic tool. In other words, assessments that can assist our tutors in developing individual learning programs for each student; which caters to both their strengths and weaknesses.

It is becoming somewhat of a trend that high school students are coming to us with lower than average basic numeracy and literacy skills. We are finding that Year 9 students have not gained the support and skills as early as possible and therefore do not pass their NAPLAN assessments. This results in the unfortunate situation where students are failing to graduate. It is crucial that parents and carers understand and appreciate the importance of NAPLAN because it is essentially part of an educational toolbox that enriches student learning.

We strive to meet the needs of our students to ensure success in and outside of the classroom. We believe that NAPLAN can help us in providing your child with assistance in all learning areas.

Why Writing a Great NAPLAN Story for the GATE Test Will Not Work

It is about this time every year that we start to see many students who want to sit the GATE test.

One of the first things that we do at Intuition is test a student's ability to write. Feedback is then provided. Sometimes parents are disappointed with the results. Occasionally we are told that their child did well in the NAPLAN and ask why their child did not do so well here.

Often, we will need to explain that the NAPLAN is a testing regime that seeks to produce students to one standard. The GATE test, on the other hand, looks for something quite different - it seeks students who stand out.

How can children stand out? Well in writing, GATE markers will look for those students who produce a piece of work that is original in its written response to a prompt – be it a picture, a word or a phrase.

In principle, you cannot study for the GATE test. However, by exposing children to writing that is new or novel in some way, shape or form can show them how other writers have stood out from their peers. Moreover, it gives students the courage to experiment and put their ideas forward in a bolder way.

2018 Tim Winton Award for Young Writers

Congratulations to Intuition students Jessica Bruining and Karthik Ramachandran who recently received recognition for their outstanding narrative writing skills in this year’s Tim Winton Award for Young Writers.

The Tim Winton Award for Young Writers is the state’s most prestigious prize for Western Australian school students, and this year they received well over one thousand two hundred entries.

Jessica was one of four finalists in the Upper Primary category; while Kartik was one of sixteen that was Highly Commended.

Jessica took Intuition’s GATE Advanced Writing Workshop last year; while Kartik recently completed Intuition’s Competition Writing Workshop.

Both workshops now feature regularly at Intuition and encourage students to broaden their current reading and help them to develop their writing.

Congratulations once again to Jessica and Karthik, and a warm welcome to new students interested in improving their writing skills - either for school or the next writing competition!

Intuition Tutors Attend a Teaching the Chronically Ill Training Course

Intuition Educational Support Tutors are EdMed Trained

Intuition tutors recently attended an EDMed professional development course for teachers at Ronald McDonald House in Nedlands, and developed a greater understanding of how to teach chronically ill students.

Chronically ill students face a raft of emotional, social, physical and cognitive challenges, and require changes to their education to help them learn as effectively as their peers.

One example is children who have undergone chemotherapy. Chemotherapy creates cognitive issues, like poor working memory. Students who once remembered complex verbal instructions can now find them difficult to understand. Intuition tutors were shown teaching strategies to help remedy this problem - like breaking larger tasks down into smaller ones; employing visual calendars and checklists to remind students what do next; and, even using certain smells to help trigger memory.

By the end of the course, all Intuition tutors had received an EDMed professional development certificate, and agreed that attending the course was worthwhile. Our tutors now have a greater understanding of how to teach the chronically ill, and were also reminded of the many clever ways students can be taught when they face a particular problem or challenge.

West Australian Selective Schools Entry Test

GATE stands for Gifted and Talented Entrance or officially known as the Western Australian Selective Schools Entrance Test (WASSET). Testing for Gifted and Talented Programs occurs in March each year. All applicants for Gifted and Talented Programs need to sit the Academic Selective Entrance Test and may also need to complete combined workshops; auditions; and interviews, depending on the programs they are applying for. Students sit a four part exam consisting of Reading Comprehension, Writing, Quantitative and Abstract Reasoning which can be the pathway for your child gaining a place in selective high school programmes.

Obtaining a place in a selective school will give your child many opportunities for their future academic success. Your child will study with other like-minded students and be engaged in a specially designed curriculum. Additionally, they will enjoy a rich learning environment that is challenging and stimulating. Children can gain entry into either academic programmes, arts programmes or language programs.

At Intuition Educational Support our team of expert tutors have designed programs that engage students and give them the tools necessary for achieving optimal results for the test. These tests differ greatly from regular school work. Questions that appear in the tests are more advanced than what students are currently learning at school and require clear professional guidance to prepare otherwise they may be at a disadvantage.

July School Holidays

From Page to Stage: A Popular School Holiday Programme of Reading, Writing and Acting

This coming July school holidays, Intuition Educational Support will offer another one of its 'From Page to Stage' workshops.

'From Page to Stage' is a popular reading, writing and acting programme designed for primary school children.

In January, students looked at fairy tales and Greek myths and treated mums and dads to modern stage interpretations of 'Little Red Riding Hood', 'Sleeping Beauty' and 'Eurynome and the Universal Egg'! And in April, children covered indigenous myths and fables.

One of the reasons for 'From Page to Stage's' ongoing success is it acknowledges that all students do not learn the same way. It stimulates children who are visual/linguistic learners with reading and writing; while it empowers students who are more hands-on, with acting.

In July, children will explore fantasy, read from 'Alice in Wonderland', 'Peter Pan' and 'Harry Potter', write about magic and other worlds, and dress up and act on stage.

Competition Writing Workshop

One question that children often ask me when they first come to Intuition Educational Support is, "How do I get my book published?"

In addition to accepting manuscripts, prospective publishers often look for new writers who have won a literature prize or award.

Selective Schools Test 2018

Do Not Forget Your Super Strategies

The countdown is on. There is less than two weeks to go until the GATE test. For many of you, this will mark your arrival at an important destination. And it will also signal a time for you to show how gifted and talented you are.

But when you sit down and take the test, one piece of advice: do not forget the super strategies that you have learnt. By this I mean, do not overlook those strategies that your tutors have demonstrated and practiced with you week-in-and-week-out at Intuition.

If you choose to write a narrative for communicating your ideas in writing, remember to give your readers an orientation, a problem and a resolution and use at least two literary devices!

In reading comprehension, remember to read between the lines and not take everything at face value.

In quantitative and abstract reasoning, do not forget to evaluate, reason and recognise patterns.

And finally, remember to mark all your answer booklet.

Eat healthy. Sleep well. Take some time out to relax. The GATE test is fast approaching.

But on test day, do not forget the super strategies that you have learnt and practiced at Intuition, and resist the temptation to fall back on old ways.

One of the most difficult times a child will face, is the transition from primary school into high school. Especially now, as they enter at a much younger age. Common challenges include, making new friends, varied class groups, less flexible timetable, adapting to different teachers, higher academic demands and increased volumes of home work.

With this in mind, we have developed a programme specifically designed to support year 6 students to become curious and confident learners, manage stress and anxiety, successfully identify mistakes as opportunities for growth and successfully navigate the leap from primary school into high school.

The programme encourages students to develop strong academic skills, as well how to cope socially and emotionally when faced with various scenarios. The programme will run for 9 hours during the January school holidays with an opportunity for parents to better understand what children will face during this transition and how to best support them.

January School Holiday Programmes

Needing some creative ideas to keep the kids busy in January? Look no further than our From the Page to the Stage' programmes.

'From Page to Stage' is a programme that is designed to captivate and engage students that are on their summer holidays.

Children will revisit or be introduced to some old Greek myths and fairy tale favourites like 'Little Red Riding Hood'.

Children will then have the opportunity to reimagine some of these old myths and tales and rewrite them in tune with our changing times.

Does, for instance, Little Red Riding Hood really need the huntsman to solve her wolf problem? And will Poseidon be stuck behind a desk doing admin, instead of out patrolling the sea?

Once committed to the page, children will then take their modern twists to an old tale to a drama workshop in preparation for the stage.

The programme is a fun way for students to create and make; explore and respond; speak, view and listen; build confidence and develop valuable social skills whilst working as a team.

We will be running three different programmes for 2 hours over 5 days. Lower Primary for students going into years 1 to 3. Upper Primary for years 4 to 6 and an Elementary programme for years 7 to 9. Book your place today.

GATE stands for Gifted and Talented Entrance or more recently known as the Western Australian Selective Schools Entrance Test (WASET). Testing for Gifted and Talented Programs occurs each year. All applicants for Gifted and Talented Programs need to sit the Academic Selective Entrance Test and may also need to complete combined workshops; auditions; and interviews, depending on the programs they are applying for. Students sit a four part exam consisting of Reading Comprehension, Writing, Quantitative and Abstract Reasoning which can be the pathway for your child gaining a place in selective high school programmes.

Your child would have started off the school year full of enthusiasm! But we are now well and truly into the second half of the year and you may be noticing that they are losing a bit of steam; their attitude might be changing to one more lethargic and
disengaged. These signs are more common than you realise and you are not alone!

Numerous children start to fall into a bit of a slump at this time and, whilst not overtly damaging, could mean they begin to slip behind unnoticed; after all they are just kids. Their attention spans are short and it can be quite easy for them to start to lose motivation, especially if they are bored or missing a central concept in their educational foundation. A lack of engagement in their learning often signals a decline in their social life. At which point children may, for fear of embarrassment, not even ask for help and subsequently find ways to hide what's going on.

Prompt response to these signs is vital to ensure stability for the rest of the year. As parents, the last thing we would like to see is our child's grades sliding backwards. If you feel that this is happening to your child here are a few tips:

Question
Ask your child about their day at school. Allow them to speak about what they've been doing and how they feel about their work. Gently ask them how they feel about the difficulty of the material that they are being taught. Ask them how they would feel if someone helped them explain something that they didn't understand.

Routine
At the start of the year we start off with all the best intentions, our day to day routines are flawless. Everything is planned to the finest detail and your kids know your expectations of them. Repetition often begets complacency and routines may, despite best intentions, fall out of place. This time more than ever it is important that we keep up with routines in regards to homework/schoolwork. Understandably, extra curricular activity routines change and can consume most of out of school time. However, you'll start to notice a significant difference if you change the routine a little and stick to it. Depending on the age of the child and the amount of homework, a good practise is to allow the child to do their homework in a common area with little disruptions as possible. Also encourage them to do the work themselves and applaud good work that they have done on their own. This helps give them the confidence needed to re-engage.

Supplementary education
There are many after school programmes available for children of all ages and it is important to choose one that fits with your child's learning style. Tuition programmes can range from large groups to small groups as well as individual.
It is important to remember a few key points when seeking supplementary education programmes: ensure that all programmes are aligned with the national curriculum; individual programmes should be tailor made specifically for your child's individual learning needs and modified accordingly to reflect this; ask for the tutors qualifications, there is now a formal accreditation process available for tutors and is 100% endorsed by the Australian Tutoring Association (ATA). Sometimes Knowing the Basics is Not Enough

Creative writing now plays a huge role in Western Australian schools. According to the K-10 Curriculum, a third of the English Pre-primary to Year 10 students produce is imaginative. And a large part of the GATE test students take to get into selective schools is also creative by nature.

Teachers do their best to provide the basics. In creative writing and a task like writing a story, this may mean teachers telling students to provide a setting, a character or characters, conflict and a resolution. However, GATE assessors look for stories that stand out.

Reading contemporary stories can show students that it is acceptable to play with structure. And analysing hint or flash fiction can also illustrate how less is more.

Teachers often do not have the time to read or to keep up to date with developments in contemporary fiction or hint or flash fiction. Or may not know where to start.

Writers, on the other hand, are required to seek out and read the latest in order to know what work publishers or editors are looking for if they are to stand any chance of being published themselves.

Sometimes knowing the basics is not enough. If you wish to improve your child's story writing ability and make them stand out from the crowd, I would encourage you to look at the writing workshops that I offer with Intuition Education Support or think about having your child tutored in the subject.

Overall improved NAPLAN Results for Western Australia

In the past week or so there has been a vast number of reports about our nations NAPLAN preliminary results. The good news is that WA students have broken several records in NAPLAN tests, 14 out of 20 assessments to be more accurate. This is fantastic news for WA who have always been known for falling behind our Eastern counterparts. However, there were some discerning results amongst year 9 students who will be required to sit further numeracy and/or literacy tests in order to qualify them for their final education certificate. The most alarming part of this report is that 60 per cent of Year 9 students fell below the required levels in the writing exam. Furthermore, a general trend of decreased writing results amongst all year groups was prevalent in WA which would suggest that writing needs to be greatly improved in order to turn this trend around in a positive direction. Results here

We could wait for government bodies to make amendments to funding education and schools to change these results. However, we could be waiting for a long time and do we have that time? If we let our students slip back further, how much more work will we require to bring them back up to standards? It seems that parents may need to take matters into their own hands to improve their children's writing results. At Intuition Educational Support we support parents and their children to change this trend and improve on these results.

In our national curriculum, one of the core aims of primary school English is to introduce and help children understand imaginative, informative and persuasive texts before they reach secondary school. By secondary school, teachers have an expectation that all students will have a basic grasp of imaginative, informative and persuasive texts. The next step is to broaden this understanding. Tuition enhancing these vital skills

In a constantly changing world, as educators it is paramount that we support children to be independent life-long learners. However, this notion is not limited to the classroom. It extends into the home, on the sporting ground and into out of school extra-curricular activities. In every aspect of a child's life they are faced with decisions and presented with ways to solve problems which can be solved.

Two key components involved in solving problems are developing critical and creative thinking skills. In its most simplest form creative thinking is the thinking we do to generate ideas, to present suggestions, images, or experience in unique ways. Whilst on the other hand, critical thinking is the thinking we do when we judge ideas, and provide evidence and logical arguments. According to the Australian Curriculum the two can be linked and are interchangeable bringing complimentary dimensions to thinking and learning.

Critical and creative thinking is a component of the general capabilities that students should develop throughout their schooling lives and teachers are expected to teach and assess these general capabilities and incorporate them within learning area content.

Typically by the end of early childhood learning, students should be able to pose factual and exploratory questions based on personal interests and experiences, identify and describe familiar information and ideas during a discussion or investigation and gather similar information or depictions from given sources. On the other end of schooling by year 10, a student should be able to critically analyse independently sourced information to determine bias and reliability, clarify complex information and ideas drawn from a range of sources and pose questions to critically analyse complex issues and abstract ideas.

That's a great deal of thinking to develop between the ages of six and sixteen! Often what can happen in-between these years, is that students may not fully grasp these skills and fall short of developing the more critical skills required in senior high school years. Term 3 is now upon us and as we spent this last weekend of the holidays doing last minute shopping for school supplies and preparing the school uniforms we ask the question: Are you and your child ready to start a new term? The start of term can be one of the most stressful times, one only has to visit the shopping centres and get amongst the chaos, where everyone is doing the same thing - preparing!

Once the preparation is over, what comes next? A good start might be to look over the mid year school reports. How has your child progressed? What areas do they need to improve in? When they walk into the classroom, no doubt their teacher will let their class know what they expect from their students and they will describe how they will measure their progress.

But what about each child as an individual? If you havn't done so already, now is a good time to revisit first semester school reports and sit down with your child and figure out together, what they would like to achieve? What areas do they feel they struggle with? How can they could improve? Why do this, you may ask? Well, with your help of course, it puts them in charge of how they spend their time and sets up ways for which they can improve. So that at the end of the year, they can see how much they have achieved and how much they have improved. It is simply a way to give them the confidence and take charge of their learning, rather than feeling like they are going to school because - they have to!
